Janice LaMarre, viola
Janice LaMarre, viola Violist Janice LaMarre brings expression, virtuosity, and innovation to her instrument and its repertoire. She performs regularly throughout the US, Canada, and in Europe in solo, chamber, and orchestral concerts, most notably in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center halls, Merkin Hall, Ottawa's National Arts Centre, the Centre d'Arts Orford, and at the Juilliard School. Ms. LaMarre recently won the Viola Congress' Canadian Music Competition, the Individual Classical Musicians grant from the Canada Arts Council for her artistry and leadership, and the prestigious Geroge MacDonald Scholarship from the Manhattan School of Music in recognition of her musical talent and academic achievement. She has performed in the Primrose competition, at Kneisel Hall in Maine, and at festivals held in Prussia Cove, Quebec, Austria, Germany, and France. Janice's orchestral debut featured Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante and Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 6. She frequently contributes to the creation of new works for chamber ensembles and solo viola through New York performances of her contemporaries' compositions.

A faculty member of the Lucy Moses School at the Kaufmann Center and of the Precollege division of Manhattan School of Music, a prior Teaching Fellow at the Juilliard and Manhattan music schools, and teacher in New York Public Schools, Janice LaMarre brings deeper musical understanding to soloists and school children alike. Ms. LaMarre studies concurrently for a Doctorate and Artist Diploma on scholarship at both the Manhattan and Yale music schools. Her current research project analyzes the viola works of Paul Hindemith, which she applies to her performances of his solo sonatas.

Janice LaMarre is a member of the New Haven and Bridgeport Symphonies. Her mentors Misha Amory, Heidi Castleman, Michael Tree, and Karen Dreyfus have shaped her playing and musical concepts. Earning Bachelors and Masters of Music degrees from the Juilliard School led to her current Doctoral studies, and will be completed with an Artist Diploma from Yale with Ettore Cause. Her recent recital programming highlights Romantic-era pieces from France and England.
